The Casa Espalamaca dream was turned into reality by Karen and Sven Junge, a creative couple from Hamburg, Germany. Married in 1999, they raised 2 kids with most summer holidays sailing on their yacht. When son and daughter moved out and on to find their own ways in life, their parents agreed to do the same. Taking a break from each other and those daily routines, looking for something new. Architect Mrs. Junge stayed in Hamburg and entrepeneur Mr. Junge embarked on a 2 year atlantic sailing voyage. In 2017, coming across solo from the USA, he stopped in Horta, went on a life-changing Faial discovery trip and returned to the family in Hamburg with a passionate vision of a house above the tide.

In Horta 2018 yacht ZARIFA became Mr. Junge’s home and his „crazy“ mid atlantic project turned into a 4 year construction adventure. Those were tough times when utter determination, help from friends and contineous family support were crucial for keeping progress on track, for transforming an old house into the exquisite estate it is today, featuring a high level of quality, interior detailing and exterior relaxation spaces like no other
