Capelinhos Volcano in Faial

A journey to the Capelinhos Volcano

One of the most unforgettable experiences during our stay was a trip to the Capelinhos Volcano in Faial, a place where history and nature meet in the most dramatic way. Traveling by bus, we enjoyed the scenic ride across the island, with views that grew more impressive as we approached the western coast.

Arriving at the site, the landscape felt almost otherworldly. The dark volcanic rock, shaped by the 1957–58 eruption, contrasts with the blue of the Atlantic, creating a view that is both raw and breathtaking. Walking around, we could almost imagine the power of the eruption that forever changed the island’s geography.

The visit was more than just sightseeing — it was a journey into the Azores’ volcanic soul. Beyond the views, the sense of history and resilience left a deep impression on everyone.

For anyone staying at Casa Espalamaca, a visit to the Capelinhos Volcano in Faial is a must. It’s not just an excursion — it’s a story written in stone and sea, waiting to be discovered.
